Chhath Puja Samagri List: The Full Checklist for All Four Days
24 June 2026 · 3 min read · Super Admin
Every item Chhath Puja needs, roughly how much, and which day it is actually for — plus the mistakes that send people back to the market on Arghya evening.
Anyone who has done the Chhath market run knows the problem. You go with a list, you come back missing three things, and by Kharna evening someone is sent out again — this time to a shop that has already sold out of soop.
The list below is the one we wish we had the first year. Quantities assume one vratti (the person keeping the fast) and a small family; scale up the fruit, thekua and diyas if more people are doing arghya.
Day 1 — Nahay Khay
The fast opens with a simple sattvic meal, usually lauki–chana dal with arwa rice, cooked without onion, garlic or ordinary salt.
- Arwa rice (parboiled) — 1 kg
- Chana dal — 250 g
- Lauki (bottle gourd) — 1
- Sendha namak — a small pack
- Pure ghee — 250 g
Day 2 — Kharna
In the evening the vratti eats kheer made with jaggery, with roti and fruit, and then the long nirjala fast begins.
- Gud (jaggery) — 500 g
- Arwa rice for kheer — 250 g
- Full-cream milk — 1 litre
- Banana — a dozen (also needed on Day 3)
- A clean burner or chulha kept only for the prasad from this point on
Day 3 — Sandhya Arghya (the main day)
This is where the long list lives. The offerings go into the soop and daura and are carried to the ghat for arghya to the setting sun.
Bamboo and vessels
- Bamboo soop — 2 to 3
- Daura or large bamboo basket — 1 to 2
- Brass or steel lota for arghya
- A thali for the puja items
Fruit and sugarcane
- Sugarcane with leaves — about 5 sticks
- Whole coconut — 2 to 3
- Banana — a full ghaur (bunch) if you can get one
- Sweet lime, apple, custard apple (sharifa), singhara, pear — a few of each
- Gagra nimbu (the large Chhath lemon) — 2 to 4 if available
Prepared prasad
- Thekua — made at home from atta, gud and ghee; keep about 1.5 kg atta aside
- Rice laddu (kasar) — optional but traditional in many families
Puja items
- Naarangi (long-tika) sindoor
- Earthen diyas — a dozen or more
- Cotton batti, plus ghee or mustard oil
- Dhoop, agarbatti, camphor
- Paan, supari, whole haldi, ginger with leaves, mustard seeds
- New saree or dhoti-kurta for the vratti
- A clean cloth to cover the soop
Day 4 — Usha Arghya
The final arghya is offered to the rising sun with the same items, prepared fresh that morning. After arghya the vratti takes the parana, usually with ginger and water first, then prasad.
The mistakes people actually make
- Buying soop too late. It sells out first — get it about a week ahead.
- Forgetting the vratti's new clothes until the last day.
- Underestimating diyas. You want extras for the ghat and the house.
- Not keeping a separate, cleaned burner for prasad from Day 2 onward.
- Assuming fresh sugarcane and gagra nimbu will be easy to find on Day 3. In most Delhi NCR markets, on that day, they are not.
If you would rather skip the market run
You can pre-book a Chhath Puja kit that has the puja samagri, sugarcane and diyas together, or pick individual items from the Chhath Essentials category and choose a delivery date — Kharna morning usually works best, so everything is fresh for both arghyas. Fruit and flowers are sourced close to the date, not stored.
